Pada kuliah yang lalu kami telah mempelajari mengenai Gendang 24 Musim. Pertama kali saya mendengar nama tersebut. Setahu saya semasa belajar Geografi Fizikal semasa di Tingkatan Enam, musim cuma ada empat iaitu musim sejuk, musim panas, musim bunga dan musim luruh.
24 musim yang diperkatakan ialah mengenai musim pertanian. 1 gendang yang terdapat dalam muzik ini mewakili 1 musim. ini bermaksud terdapat 24 gendang semuanya. Gendang 24 musim di Malaysia adalah berbeza dengan di China.
Di dalam kesenian gendang 24 musim ini menitikberatkan tiga elemen penting iaitu alat muzik, martial art dan gaya semasa pertanian. Seperti video gendang 24 musim yang telah dipertontonkan oleh En Amran pada kuliah yang lalu, ketangkasan pergerakan para pemain gendang amat menakjubkan. Mereka begitu bersemangat dan pergerakan mereka sekata. Selain itu, mereka juga dapat meniru bunyi kompang dengan hanya menggunakan gendang tersebut. Memang sangat menarik.
Pakain yang mereka pakai ialah kostum tradisional lelaki Cina. Pelopor kepada muzik ini di Malaysia telah diberi anugrah tertinggi negara iaitu Seniman Negara. Beliau ialah En Tan Chai Pan.
Kini, Gendang 24 Musim sudah menjadi aktiviti di beberapa buah sekolah dan ia tidak semestinya dimainkan oleh pelajar Cina.
